A History of Advancing Energy Efficiency
California’s pioneer spirit for advancing energy efficiency and renewable energy dates back to the 1970s. Consider this:
- We’ve been able to keep Californians’ electricity bills 25 percent lower than the national average.
- We’ve saved tens of billions of dollars in reduced electricity costs and have avoided needing to build at least 30 power plants.
- In the past 30 years, we’ve doubled the amount of economic output California gets for each kilowatt-hour of electricity used.
Because approximately 21 percent of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to electricity generation, increasing energy efficiency also greatly contributes to reducing the state’s carbon footprint. We continue to lead the nation in creating clean energy jobs.
