Simply put, energy is the capacity for doing work. Energy is in everything around us and is essential to all aspects of life. Our bodies turn the food we eat into energy to sustain us. Fuel provides cars with energy to run. Energy also generates electricity, which powers our homes and businesses. Natural gas is energy used to heat our water and home and cook our food.
Power and energy are not the same things. Power (such as electrical power or solar power) measures the rate at which energy is generated, transferred and used over time.
